The Aussie mobile sector was subject to “intense competition,” it said, but despite this grew its customer base by 131,000 for July – September period, meaning telco No.2 now has 9.23 million customers. <\/p>\n

In total, Optus now has 4.22m user on prepaid, 5m postpaid mobile users, 5.96m 3G customers and 1.46 million wireless broadband customers. <\/p>\n

The SingTel owned telco also increased on-net broadband customers to almost 1 million (972,000) – a jump of 4 per cent  – from same period 2010. <\/p>\n

This major mobile boost helped push total mobile revenue to A$1.51bn, with incoming service revenue strong, recording 21% growth this quarter due to “subscriber growth, increased SMS and voice revenue,” Optus said today in a statement. <\/p>\n

Average revenue per subscriber dropped A$1 from the same quarter last year, which reflected a higher mix of wireless broadband and increased inclusions on mobile plans.<\/p>\n

OptusGo Places, a ‘hyper-local’ mobile application featuring vouchers, restaurant listings, reviews was among the new innovations cited as well as newly launched  IPTV service, in asociation with fetchTV, Optus MeTV. <\/p>\n

On the network front, the roll-out of Long Term Evolution (LTE) on the Optus Network, is a major step forward for the telco, due April 2012, allowing it to go on an even footing with Telstra, the first telco to announced 4G service earlier this year. <\/p>\n

U900 spectrum migration programs will also enhance Optus 3G mobile coverage across metropolitan areas, it added. <\/p>\n

In the fixed line business, lower on-net broadband revenue per user from  was attributed to increased data inclusions, which caused consumer fixed on-net revenue to fall 5%. EBITDA decreased by 3 per cent on lower revenue.<\/p>\n

In Business and Wholesale fixed, overall revenue grew 5 per cent, contributed by strong satellite and ICT and managed services revenue. EBITDA increased 4 per cent year-on-year.<\/p>\n

Business fixed revenue grew 2 per cent, with ICT and managed services up 7 percent due to an increase in managed services revenue from prior corporate wins. <\/p>\n

Optus also won some major corporate accounts over the quarter, including  Virgin Australia and NRMA. <\/p>\n

On the Wholesale side, fixed revenue grew 11 per cent. Data and IP also jumped 5 percent with increased demand for internet bandwidth and access. Satellite revenue rose 24 per cent, driven mainly by revenue from the NBN Interim Satellite Service contract.<\/p>\n

“Optus continues to deliver resilient financial performance against the backdrop of a highly competitive Australian telecommunications market with competitors reducing prices and profitability,” Optus chief executive Paul O’Sullivan said.<\/p>\n

SingTel today announced group revenue has increased 4 per cent, while net profit declined 1 per cent to $882 million. <\/p>\n
