Internet Explorer 6 Like Old Milk Says Microsoft

Microsoft Australia has released an online advisory that urges users to upgrade their Internet Explorer to the latest version. The company has compared Internet Explorer 6 to nine-year-old milk that you would not drink.

“You wouldn’t drink 9-year old milk, so why use a 9-year-old browser?” said Microsoft.

“When Internet Explorer 6 was launched in 2001, it offered cutting edge security for the time. Since then, the Internet has evolved and the security features of Internet Explorer 6 have become outdated. With the latest state-of-the-art security features, Internet Explorer 8 is designed to cope with today’s modern cyber crime. In fact, research studies prove it,” continued the company.

In order to convince users to move to IE8, the company showed that the browser was able to detect socially engineered malware 85 percent of the time (according to NSS Labs), has more benefits (such as built-in Cross-site Script Filter (XSS), anti-malware protection, malware detection on download) than older versions, and “offers new features designed to protect your privacy.”

Various online reports say that Microsoft’s share of the browser market is now below 60 percent, while Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome browsers are starting to gain market share.

Telstra 100Mbps Gateway Unveiled

Telstra has rolled out two new gateways including one which supports speeds of up to 100Mbps.

According to Telstra, the BigPond Velocity Home Network Gateway is specifically designed to work with the Telstra Velocity Network which supports speeds of up to 100Mbps into the home.

It features four Gigabit Ethernet ports, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and is bundled with a separate 802.11n USB Wi-Fi adaptor which can be plugged into any computer with a USB port. It also comes with two USB ports that will allow customers to plug in an external USB storage device and share content on the device with laptops and PCs around the home.

“Actual speeds a single customer will get will depend on a variety of factors including customer equipment, server limitations, Wi-Fi reception/capacity, and so will be less than the total capacity into the home,” says the company.

Also launched today is the ‘BigPond Ultimate Cable Home Network Gateway’ which is specifically designed for DOCSIS 3.0 cable broadband. It features four Gigabit Ethernet ports, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and is also bundled with a separate 802.11n USB Wi-Fi adaptor.

Both gateways come with a self-install CD, a feature called Wireless Protected Setup (WPS) that makes connecting new WPS enabled devices to the Gateway over Wi-Fi easy, and a unique security key which offers Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA2) protection standard.

The gateways are compatible with Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Apple Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6 systems.

Choice Slags Off Printer Manufacturers

Leading consumer advocate organisation Choice has slagged off printer manufacturers and has accused them of selling inks at exorbitant prices.

According to Choice, consumers need to be wary of being ripped off by printer inks that cost up to $20 a teaspoon and use microchips to prevent you using cheaper alternatives.

Tests with 13 multifunction printers showed the cost of ink could be extortionate. Choice says that if you printed five B+W pages, three colour pages and one photo every day for a year costed over three years one brand would cost $9436 to run.

And while you can buy cheaper genuine replacement cartridges overseas, you often can’t use them with the Australian-bought printer because the microchip attached to the ink cartridge must match the country.

“They do this to stop legal parallel importation (also known as grey importation). Another effect of the addition of a chip is that third party ink manufacturers have a much harder job competing,” says the report.

Choice spokesman Christopher Zinn said, “The printer manufacturers own the patents for the chips which means third party competitors can’t legally copy them. The competition is frozen out and consumers pay more.”

According to Western Digital, the Scorpio Black family of hard drives is designed for use in OEM notebook systems as well as by users who want to upgrade the speed and performance of their current notebook system. This hard drive combines 7200 RPM spin speed with a SATA 3 GB/s interface and 16 MB cache to deliver maximum notebook performance.

WD’s vice president and general manager of mobile storage, Jim Morris said, “In today’s busy and on-the-go lifestyle, notebook systems play an increasingly pivotal role in the home office and are relied upon to efficiently run sophisticated applications. High performance, high-capacity hard drives are a key ingredient to notebooks as system manufacturers continue to add data-hungry features that allow users to fully benefit from the latest computing technologies.”

 WD Scorpio Black Exclusive Features:

IntelliSeek – IntelliSeek technology calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration.

SecurePark – WD’s SecurePark parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down and when the drive is off. This ensures the recording head never touches the disk surface resulting in improved long term reliability due to less head wear, and improved shock tolerance.

ShockGuard – WD’s ShockGuard technology protects the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks during shipping and handling and in daily operation.

Free-fall Sensor – As an added layer of protection, if the drive (or the system it’s in) is dropped while in use, WD’s free-fall sensor detects that the drive is falling and, in less than 200 milliseconds, parks the head off the disks to help prevent damage and data loss.

WhisperDrive – WD’s WhisperDrive technology combines state-of-the-art seeking algorithms that result in one of the quietest 2.5-inch drives on the market.
