AOC Monitor Provides Wide Viewing Angles

The AOC IF23 is aimed at professional graphic artists or enthusiasts who want a bright and crisp display that has wide viewing angles.

Specifications-wise the IF23 sports a 23-inch widescreen, promises a dynamic contrast ratio of 100000:1, a brightness of 250 cd/m2, a response time of 6ms, and a viewing angle of 178. It has a native resolution of 1920×1080 but only has a D-Sub and DVI-D port. It could have been better if AOC included a HDMI port on the device.

The IF23 sports a photo-frame design with a glossy blue front and a white back. Unlike other monitors, the cabinet is supported by a single-post stand that can be rotated to change the monitor’s angle (3 to 12 degrees).

This unconventional design may be ‘refreshing’ for some, but others would definitely want it in just plain black. Another thing that could put off users is its build quality – the monitor feels flimsy and the plastic just feels cheap.

We connected the unit to a Windows PC (via DVI-D) and adjusted the monitor’s contrast and brightness to improve the image quality. The IPS (In Plane Switching) panel allowed us to see a photo at an angle without colour degradation. The colours were crisp and it was able to show more image depth, especially in dark photos and video clips. Static images were sharp and games played on the monitor showed minimal ghosting.

The directional keys found below the device also function as Hotkeys to adjust contrast, viewing mode, image ratio, and source. Pressing the power button displays various commands that allows a user to adjust luminance and colour temperature, turn on colour boost (full enhance, nature skin, green field, sky blue, auto detect) or colour boost (frame size, brightness, contrast, H. position, V. position, and bright frame on/off), adjust the OSD settings, or reset the monitor to default.

The unit also comes with six eco modes that automatically adjust the settings according to the source. This includes Standard, Text, Internet, Game, Movie, and Sports. The IF23’s DCR (Dynamic Contrast Ratio) can also be enabled or disabled.

For $399 you get a great monitor that produces great image quality at any viewing angle. The only problem is if you do not like how it looks – the IF23 is only available in glossy blue and sports a picture frame design. It tries its best to stand out from the crowd, but has a hard time convincing people otherwise.

Google Stimulates Small Businesses

Google is giving small and medium enterprises a free $75 search marketing campaign as part of its business stimulus offer.

The company hopes that through its stimulus offer, SMBs would reach new customers and drive sales in tough times.

Google Australia’s Head of Online, Julian Persaud said: “At Google, we want to help propel the Australian digital economy. The Internet drives efficiencies and opens new markets. Encouraging more Australian businesses to connect with customers online is a major part of that vision.”

According to the company, both online and “bricks-and-mortar” businesses will benefit from the stimulus offer as research shows that many Australians are doing their research online and then heading in-store to buy. Monash’s Australian Centre for Retail Studies has found that 50 percent of Australian shoppers research their retail purchases online before they get to the store to buy.

Search marketing has also become increasingly popular in Australia over the past 12 months, with thousands of businesses embracing the benefits of measurable, cost-effective and targeted advertising programs such as Google AdWords.

Business owners who have not yet tried AdWords can take advantage of Google’s $75 stimulus offer before 30 June 2009 at google.com.au/stimulus.

While this stimulus offer is for businesses that are new to Google AdWords, Google is also offering existing advertisers two special master classes help them improve the performance of their search marketing campaigns.

A select number of existing advertisers that attend the seminars will receive a free, tailored campaign “optimisation” from a Google expert to drive better results and increased sales.

Epson Ink Cartridges To Be Recycled

Epson has launched an ink cartridge recycling program for its professional printing customers as part of the company’s ongoing global commitment to sustainable business practices.

Epson is reducing its environmental impact by introducing a recycling program that meets the expectations of its large format printing customers.

Epson’s Business Solutions Manager, Craig Heckenberg said, “Like Epson, our professional customers are concerned about the environment and are looking for ways to reduce their impact on the environment, so by introducing a simple way to recycle their ink cartridges we can collectively reduce waste to landfill. Encouraging recycling and providing services to enable our professional customers to recycle is just one way that Epson is demonstrating its commitment to the environment.”

In June, Epson Australia’s parent company, Seiko Epson Corporation, announced an ambitious multi-part program to address some of the most pressing environmental concerns facing the global community and how Epson intends to tackle them over the next 10 years.

The program commits Epson to a 10 year plan aimed at:

  1. Reduction of CO2 emissions by 90% across the entire product life cycle.
  2. Inclusion of all products in the resource reuse and recycling loop.
  3. Reduction of direct CO2 emissions by 90%, and elimination of global warming gas emissions other than CO2.
  4.  Restoration and preservation of biodiversity as a member of the ecosystem, together with local communities.

Mr. Heckenberg said Epson Australia’s professional printing customers can now simply order their ink cartridge collection boxes from Epson’s Pro Graphics web site [http://www.epson.com.au/prographics/]

“Once the boxes are full (ready for collection) customers call the number on the box and the full liner bags will be collected by our recycling partner Close the Loop. We all want to do whatever we can for the environment, and now Epson is giving these high volume users a chance to turn their used cartridges to good use,” Mr Heckenberg said.

Close the Loop is the recycling company working with Epson, Planet Ark, and other printer vendors on the Cartridges 4 Planet Ark program to recover consumer and business laser and inkjet cartridges for recycling.

New Intel Centrino Set To Be Hot

Intel has just unveiled its new Centrino 2 Processor Technology products for laptops. These new processors will give notebooks faster performance, better wireless performance, longer battery life, and up to 90 percent faster performance on intensive multimedia applications.

According to Intel, close to 250 innovative consumer and business notebook PC designs are on the way, including those equipped with the right combination of powerful processors, graphics and battery life to enjoy viewing stunning high definition videos and myriad other computer and Internet activities.

Intel said it also plans to unveil eight processors within 90 days that will include first-ever mobile quad-core products and second-generation products for ultra-thin and light notebooks. In total, Intel will bring 14 diverse new processors into the marketplace as laptop sales continue to outpace desktop PCs.

Formerly codenamed Montevina, Intel Centrino 2 processor technology and Intel Centrino 2 with vPro Technology improve upon every facet of a laptop’s main features, including performance and battery life via new processors and chipsets, faster draft 802.11n wireless, and new business-class manageability capabilities.

Intel Corporate Vice President and General Manager of the company’s Mobile Platforms Group, Mooly Eden said, “When we first introduced Intel Centrino back in 2003, there were very few Wi-Fi hotspots, YouTube videos and social media didn’t really exist, ‘thin and light’ only referred to weight goals and desktop PCs outsold notebooks by a very wide margin. Today, we’re paving the way to HD entertainment, rich online gaming, faster broadband wireless speeds and an easier and more secure way for businesses to manage, update and repair their notebook fleets.”

General Manager for Intel Australia and New Zealand, Philip Cronin said, “The local market is demanding a better mobile computing experience and Intel Centrino 2 processor technology delivers this in spades.  Whether it’s displaying HD multimedia more vividly, connecting via wireless faster or strengthening battery performance, with Intel Centrino 2 processor technology our OEM, reseller and retail partners are ready to help their customers realise this higher quality experience.”

Intel is introducing five dual core processors based on Intel’s reinvented transistors (high-k metal gate formula) and advanced 45-nanometer manufacturing process. These processors come with a faster 1066MHz front side bus and up to 6MB of L2 cache, and three versions reduce laptop processor wattage about 30 percent, down to just 25 watts. Also featured is Deep Power Down Technology that turns off processing components such as core clocks and cache memory when the laptop is idle for greater energy savings.

Switchable graphics, a new optional power-saving feature available on Intel Centrino 2-based notebooks, provides both integrated and discrete graphics on a single notebook, enabling users to easily switch between the two options. Switchable graphics delivers greater 3-D performance when needed while providing the option for greater power savings for the best of both worlds.

For consumers, Intel Centrino 2 processor technology delivers the horsepower and battery life to enjoy a typical full-length, Blu-ray high-definition video on a single battery charge for the first time, plus the ability to play a variety of online games, download music or post videos faster than before.

For businesses, Intel Centrino 2 with vPro technology offers enhanced manageability and security options. This is increasingly important as companies replace desktops with notebooks and need to remotely diagnose, update and repair systems over a wireless network. Improved manageability with AMT 4.0 has also been added that provides wireless manageability during system sleep states, ongoing remote configuration capabilities, support for next-generation management standards (WS-MAN and DASH 1.0) and the ability for an employee to initiate communications to IT from outside a company’s firewall.
