New 10Mbps Business Broadband By Telstra

Telstra is now offering a new broadband service that provides businesses with upload and download speeds of up to 10Mbps.Following a major upgrade of its symmetric business broadband network, this new service  is called Telstra Business Broadband (TBB) Ethernet and will replace the Business DSL service.

In a blog posted by Telstra’s Business Executive Director, Brian Harcourt, he said that unlike consumer ADSL which offers faster download speeds and slower upload speeds, TBB Ethernet is ‘symmetric’, offering the same speeds in both directions.

“TBB Ethernet is important for our customers as many currently use Business DSL and the maximum speed they can get is 4 megabits per second or less, depending on their distance from the Telstra exchange,” said Harcourt.

“As demand for bandwidth constantly increases, some are starting to find Business DSL is not really meeting their day-to-day needs. To deal with this problem up until now, businesses have had to look at getting a more expensive fibre connection to their premises – which for small and medium-size businesses is too expensive.”

“This upgraded service will help drive innovation in Australia’s small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs), bringing increased reliability and a boost in upload and download speeds, up to 10 megabits per second,” continued Harcourt.

Brian Harcourt also said that the speed of the TBB Ethernet makes it possible to support quality IP telephony and applications like video-conferencing, offering big savings in telephone call costs and the travel budget. It will also help reduce waiting times for businesses that are often uploading big documents.

According to the company, some of its new allowances offer customers up to three times more data at no additional cost, along with longer recharge expiry periods and a bonus 1GB of data for new users.

Customers who recharge $40 will now receive 1GB of data (up from 300MB), and those who select the $60 recharge option will receive 3GB of data, which is an increase of more than 2GB.

Telstra has also announced that it will be extending its recharge periods on selected allowances. The new 3GB allowance can be used for 90 days, while the 4GB allowance will offer 180 days of use before credit expires.

Acting Group Managing Director, Telstra Consumer, Ms Glenice Maclellan said, “With Telstra pre-paid there are no bills or fixed term contracts so it’s a great choice for people who want to keep track of what they’re spending month to month. We only charge customers for every kilobit of data they use so they can rest assured they’re only paying for what they use within the recharge period, giving them greater control and transparency.”

New Telstra Service Simplifies Messaging

Telstra will now allow users to combine email, voicemail, picture messaging, SMS, and multimedia communications in one online and mobile service.

Called MyConnect, this new service aims to break down the traditional barriers between multiple messaging systems, allowing users to manage their phone messages and emails from any mobile phone or online.

Group Managing Director, Telstra Consumer, David Moffatt said, “With MyConnect, customers have access to a truly integrated mobile and online messaging system. Sending email on your Next G mobile phone is now as simple as sending an SMS – using a single messaging folder for easy access.”

“When a customer receives a picture message on their mobile phone and they are sitting at their PC using the internet, they can view the message on their computer screen in MyInbox. Similarly, if they’re out and about, they can still receive important emails on their Next G handset,” he added.

MyConnect includes three new integrated services:

  • MyInbox – an online message, contact and calendar management centre where customers can access email, picture messaging, voicemail and videomail as well as send SMS, MMS and email – no subscription costs and access included in your Telstra or BigPond membership/plans.
  • MyEmail – provides access to up to five existing email accounts plus alerts of incoming mail on compatible Telstra Next G mobile handsets – $7 per month.
  • MySync – automatic daily backup of contacts from compatible Next G mobiles to a secure on-line website, and synchronisation with MyInbox – just $3 per month.

Internode Rolls Out Terabyte Plan

Internode is set to take on broadband providers like iPrimus, iiNet, and TPG with the launch of its ‘true’ terabyte plan that can be used anytime.

The new Internode T-shirt Plans.

Called XXL Easy Broadband, this 1TB ADSL2+ plan is free of any off-peak impediments but includes both uploads and downloads. The plan will cost $159.95 if it is unbundled or $149.95 when bundled with its NodeLine telephone service.

The company will also be launching T-Shirt plans ranging from S (100GB) to XXL (1TB) from next week.

Internode managing director Simon Hackett said the XXL Easy Broadband ADSL2+ plan was the first ‘real’ 1000GB plan on the Australian market. “Our plans let you use your quota whenever you want,” he said.

“That’s in stark contrast to existing high-end market plans that have split their quota into peak and off peak amounts, with the off peak only available for a minority of the time,

“Our M and L plans offer great value and progress cleanly from the entry-level Easy S plan while the XL and XXL plans offer huge quotas for those whom too much is never enough.

“Our new T-shirt plan table is a major extension of Internode’s enormously successful Easy and Naked Easy broadband plans. It’s worth noting that there are no changes to our other plan tables. These new plans just add value and additional choice for any customer who has an appetite for large data quotas.”

The new Internode Easy Broadband plans will be available next week from www.internode.on.net/easy.

Telco Customer Service Responses Fall Short

While ACMA has received over 120 submissions to its Reconnecting the Customer inquiry, it believes that response from the industry falls short of what has been expected.ACMA Chairman’s Chris Chapman said, “There has been a healthy response from members of the public and consumer representatives. But frankly the response from industry falls short of what we had expected, given the early positive signals from industry chief executives.”

“Too many of the submissions were little more than reiterations of the current self-regulatory framework and cautioned against any regulatory intervention. I was surprised the telcos did not come up with more constructive solutions to issues they admit are major problems,” added Chapman.

Telstra said in its submission that while it believes that customer service is a key differentiator in a competitive market, it “does not believe the current challenges impacting customer service and complaint handling warrant regulatory intervention.”

“While acknowledging that further improvement is required, Telstra believes it has taken significant steps during the past 18 months to identify key areas of customer dissatisfaction, and taken action to improve the standard of customer service and compliant handling,” said the company.

VHA said that transition to new services and technologies may lead to increased complaints. For example, the company has a measure in place to manage the incidence of bill shock and prevent it from reoccurring. However, the introduction of new technologies may increase in increase number ‘complaints’. VHA has received a number of complaints during the iPhone 4 launch and feels that customers were using the complaints process as a ‘means to upgrade their mobile for free to the iPhone 4.’

“VHA considers that these anomalous peak complaint times include some calls which are not genuine complaints. This fact should be taken into consideration when reviewing the statistics.”

Finally, Optus’s submission said that while all is not perfect in the telecommunications industry, it believes that the “existing regulatory regime is sufficiently flexible to address areas of concern; that appropriate consumer safeguards are already in place; that the competition-driven regulatory framework is undoubtedly delivering enormous benefits to Australian consumers and the broader economy; and that service providers are actively working on delivering improved customer care to their customers.”

Review: All-In-One HP PC Not So Touch Smart

HP has joined the touch bandwagon by releasing a PC that has a touch-sensitive screen, allowing you to use your fingers to scroll through menus and files. But despite looking good on paper, and on TV commercials aired on primetime, the TouchSmart failed to impress us.

Sure, the TouchSmart software is easy to use and can give you a ‘hands-on’ experience while taking a look at photos and videos. But when it came to using the touch screen on Windows Vista, we were plagued with small icons that were hard to press and unresponsive icons that needed to be tapped over and over.

Fortunately, HP has included a wireless keyboard and mouse with the package, making it easier for consumers to use the IQ508a for Windows-based programs.

The unit sports a piano black finish and is on the heavy side as all of its major components are installed behind the touchscreen. Up front, users can find a 22-inch screen, built-in speakers, webcamera, and a ‘Home’ key that automatically launches the TouchSmart function.

The left spine hosts the ‘Ambient Light’ button that casts a cool white glow from the base of the computer, two USB ports, an audio line-in, and a headphone jack, while the unit’s power button, volume and mute controls, memory card reader, FireWire (IEEE 1394) port, and slot-loading CD/DVD drive can be found on the opposite side.

Removing the connector cover at the back of the IQ508 reveals three additional USB ports, plus Ethernet and digital audio ports (SPDIF out), an audio line-out, TV-in, S-Video in, Stereo Audio in, and an IR Emitter. The unit’s computer stand, security lock slot, power connector, wireless mouse and keyboard receiver, and cable clip are also located at the back of the unit.

The HP TouchSmart uses an Intel Core 2 Duo T5850 processor running at 2.16GHz, an Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS graphics card (256MB), 4GB of RAM, and 500GB of storage space. This means that the unit can handle games, video editing, or a TV show recording with minimal slowdowns.

HP uses a Window’s Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition and comes pre-installed with HP’s Total Care Advisor and Update, Cyberlink’s YouCam, Muvee’s autoProducer, Norton’s Internet Security (Trial), as well as various Help and Tools software.

HP’s TouchSmart software is also included and is the major highlight of the PC. This software allows users to listen to their music, play stored videos, check the weather, write post-it notes, play games (like Spider Solitaire, Chess Titans, and Mahjong), and surf the Internet. The interface is divided into two major sections, with the one on top displaying live content. The touch-sensitive screen worked well for the main icons, but unfortunately we had some issues pressing (and dragging) the smaller icons on the screen.

Since the unit comes with a built-in TV tuner, users can record TV shows directly to the hard drive and watch TV shows when they want to. It also comes with a built-in Wi-Fi, allowing users to stream/retrieve content from their existing home network.

While the HP TouchSmart IQ508a offers a lot to consumers, it still needs a couple of firmware updates to provide the best touch experience possible. The HP TouchSmart IQ508a is now available but is exclusively sold at Harvey Normalns with an RRP of $2,499. If that price is too steep, users can opt to purchase the IQ505a that has downgraded specifications and a missing TV tuner for $1,999.
