Macquarie Involved In Small Business Telco Scam

Macquarie Bank has been accused of being involved in deceit and trickery by bundling televisions, notebooks, phones, and other electronic goods into contracts that have hit small business with tens and thousands of dollars in fees.
The head of the ACCC, Graeme Samuel has told the ABC1’s Four Corners program that he attempted to negotiate with the CEO, Nicholas Moore, but was rebuffed. He described it as like hitting ‘a brick wall.’

According to an ABC News report by Stephen Long, Macquarie is a major financier of deals for “telephony bundling” which involves selling telco services with other ‘free’ items such as notebooks, televisions, and other electronic goods.

However, as soon as businesses sign up with a telco, they will be hit with tens and thousands of dollars in fees for the supposedly ‘free’ equipment that they received.

Four Corners says that it has found evidence of fraudulent or doctored contracts, forged signatures, and finance companies directly debiting money from people’s bank accounts without authorisation. It has also found that whistleblowers were taught to hide the presence of rental contracts for the equipment and to trick people into signing the deals while maintaining the equipment was ‘free’.

Graeme Samuel told ABC’s Stephen Long that what small businesses don’t realise is that as soon as they sign with the telco, they are also signing with a finance company.

“We’ve found far, far too many – literally hundreds if not thousands of small businesses have been caught by these sorts of arrangements,” Mr Samuel told Long.

Mr. Samuels has approached CEOs from various finance companies and asked them to hold off pursuing small business through the courts but was rebuffed.

Lenovo Unveils Multi-Touch Notebook

Two of Lenovo notebooks will now have a multi-touch screen which can be used with the touch function in Windows 7.

Lenovo’s Product and Marketing Director, Chris Kelly said, “We see now as the right time for multi-touch screens on PCs. With touch screens increasingly becoming part of more devices we use routinely and continued improvement of the technology ,including the integration of touch in the upcoming Windows 7 operating system, the environment for making touch part of our tablet PC and ThinkPad T400s laptop experience couldn’t be better. We’ve also extended the touch experience with Simple Tap to make frequent hardware-based functions touch-enabled and simple.”

According to the company, the optional multi-touch screen ThinkPad X200 Tablet caters to individuals in fields such as sales, health care and education. Users can now use two-finger touch to perform a variety of gestures, including pinching, zooming, tapping and flicking through documents, web pages and photos instead of using a mouse.

The high performance ThinkPad T400s laptop serves professionals in engineering and design. Now these users can manipulate four fingers on the ThinkPad T400s laptop’s optional multi-touch screen to not only replace the mouse but transform the way they work.

They can now use four fingers to manipulate objects, move images with two hands and even have another person touch the screen at the same time with them. As new multi-touch applications are introduced, there will be new possibilities for using multi-touch screen laptops.

With upcoming ThinkPad X200 Tablet models supporting the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system, these mobile users can also take advantage of improved predictive text over previous operating systems, improved handwriting recognition in more languages and formula input features for math and scientific equations.

Crest Powerdock Charges Four Devices

If you play with your PSP while on the train, listen to your iPod in the office, and use your mobile to call your friends, then there is a possibility that you have to charge them all at the same time. Instead of plugging three chargers at the same time, why not use a single dock that can charge up to four devices at once?

The Crest Powerdock allows a user to charge up to four different types of mobile devices at once. This circular dock has one power cord and comes with three interchangeable ‘slices’ designed for Nokia phones, iPods, and mini-USB devices. A USB charging port is also included and is located beside the AC port.

Since there are only three slices included in the package, users can purchase an additional slice for $14.95 if they want to charge another device (10 available). Checking online, we found that Bing Lee sells the charging slices for $14.

Charging is straightforward: all a user needs to do is to plug the Powerdock into an outlet, connect the devices that need charging, and press the on/off switch located in the middle. The green LED should light up, which means that the devices are now charging.

If the green light is flashing while charging, you may have to remove a device as it indicates potential overload and overheating. The Powerdock comes with a built-in fuse to prevent overloading, but we are happy to say that we did not experience this throughout our test.

Charging space is definitely not an issue with the Powerdock as we were able to charge our BlackBerry Bold, iPod Classic, and Nokia phone at the same time. But like any other charging docks available in the market, users cannot use their mobile phones unless removed from the station.

If you want to have a dock that charges all you devices in one location, then the Crest Powerdock is worth taking a look at. It is available now for $79.95 (comes with a Nokia, iPod, and Mini-USB slice) and $14.95 for additional charging slices.

For: Charges up to four devices at once; Reduces clutter; Slices can be bought separately; Built-in USB port
Against: Only three slices are included; Users must buy a slice if their phone is not compatible the first time around.
Conclusion: A desktop charger without the messy wires.

Tasmanians Now Connected To NBN

Internet broadband providers Internode and iPrimus have announced that they have successfully connected its first customers in Tasmania to the National Broadband Network.According to Internode, IT technician Robert Pettman, who lives at the suburb of Midway Point, saw the lights come alive on his fibre modem about 5pm yesterday. He is Internode’s first customer on the NBN Tasmania trial network after applying for a 50 megabit-per-second fibre optic broadband service at the start of June.

“It’s awesome. It’s a major speed increase on what I had before, which was a 1.5 megabit per second ADSL service. Since it went live about 5pm, I’ve done speed tests and have seen a few peaks of 80 megabits per second, although it mostly hovers around 50Mb/s, which is what I ordered,” said Pettman.

Internode product manager Jim Kellett said the company had received strong demand from people living in the three areas covered by the NBN pilot program. “We’ve deliberately offered a service that is better priced than ADSL so that people have a real incentive to test out this new service,” he said.

Besides Internode, iPrimus also announced that its iPrimus Extreme 100Mbps service was installed during the day at the customer premises and a successful connection to the internet was made by the customer yesterday afternoon.

Mark, the first fully operational iPrimus customer said: “We have a PC, two laptops and a few gaming consoles, so having everything online at once and all working fast is critical to us. We are definitely looking forward to streaming TV and movies in the future. We have been with Primus for eleven years and the customer service we receive has always been excellent.”

iPrimus General Manager of Marketing and Products, Andrew Sims stated: “This is a fantastic and significant milestone for Tasmania and iPrimus. The installation, set-up and coordination went well which is a testament to the hard work and effort of everyone involved.”
